Some community names are created.
This one was discovered...
Long before today's homes began taking shape along Farmhouse Lane, the Hildreth name was part of Canterbury's agricultural landscape.
Historical records document Lucian S. Hildreth as a longtime Canterbury dairy farmer with deep roots along West Road. By 1959, Canterbury's town records show Hildreth with a barn, a 34-cow dairy herd and several landholdings totaling approximately 325 acres. His involvement with cattle dates back even further—a national livestock registry records the transfer of a registered Devon bull to Lucian Hildreth of Canterbury in 1941.
The Hildreth family's connection to the land continued for generations. Recorded deeds associated with the property preserve the names of Samuel B. Hildreth, Lucian and Ellen Hildreth, and later Rebecca and Joel Hildreth and Hildreth Acres LLC.
But the family's contribution to Canterbury extended beyond farming. Lucian served his community on the School Board, helped with the elementary-school building committee, drove Canterbury schoolchildren for many years, and participated in both the New Hampshire Farm Bureau and the local Grange.
When this new community was being envisioned, the Hildreth name found in the property's historical records provided a natural connection to the land's past.
Today, Hildreth's Farm carries that name forward—not to recreate what once stood here, but to remember the generations and rural traditions that helped shape Canterbury.
A new community and a name that was already here.
